The grass on the old ball yard was green, the players were in clean uniforms (for now) and the sky was crystal blue, perfect for catching pop ups.

Play ball! Let’s play two.

The 2016 edition of Little League baseball popped on Sunday like a catcher’s mitt absorbing a fast ball as hundreds of boys and girls marched Ferry Street at noon to be greeted by a refurbished field and freshly painted dugouts. They waited patiently on the grass while the grownups made speeches.

“This is a day to celebrate the players and the more than 120 volunteers who coach these kids throughout the season,” said Bill Keeler, president of Grafton Little League in front of a large crowd. He said there were over 40 sponsors who contributed to the league this year who, with their financial contributions, enable the league to buy uniforms, equipment, and upkeep of the fields. “When I think about what makes Grafton Little League successful each year, it really is about the volunteers. Without them, this league would not be possible,” he said.

The league also dedicated the refurbished Ferry Street field as Eppinger Field in recognition of the support from the Eppinger family whose contributions helped the field makeover a success. “I’d like to say thank you for all you have done over the years,” Keeler said during the ceremony. “And thank you for the very generous contribution you made over the years that enabled us to renovate this field.” The Ferry Street ball park is now designed with two pitcher mound distances to accommodate two levels of player skills.
