At Westborough District Court on Thursday, Michael Sugarman was charged with murder for the death of his wife, Kelly Sugarman, the Worcester County District Attorney said. Sugarman was ordered held without bail according to District Attorney Joseph D. Early.
On April 13, Grafton police officers found Kelly Sugarman, 36, deceased on the floor of her bedroom in her home at 55 Worcester Street “with obvious bruising, marks and trauma to her throat,” court records revealed. The police were brought to the home by the couple’s 5-year-old daughter who was seen by police walking alone on Worcester Street, a busy road in Grafton. Police found Michael Sugarman on the kitchen floor clutching a knife in his neck, which authorities said appeared to be self-inflicted. On April 14, Michael Sugarman was initially charged with assault and battery on a family/ household member. He pleaded not guilty to that charge.
But on Thursday, after a brief hearing, Judge Vito A. Virzi ordered that a doctor evaluate the mental health of Sugarman, 42. At the hearing, Assistant District Attorney Terry McLaughlin told the court that the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner had determined the cause of death to be homicide. McLaughlin also told the court that the 5-year-old daughter saw the alleged assault. The girl is in the custody of the Department of Children and Families, the office of the district attorney said.
Sugarman was sent to Bridgewater State Hospital for mental evaluation. His next date in Westborough District Court is May 11.
