Chipping away at the list of road repairs in town, the Public Works Advisory Committee met with Selectmen last week to propose a list for 2017.
The advisory committee also recapped the remaining 2016 projects, including a lengthy discussion on Carroll Road. Established as a priority road project, Town Administrator Tim McInerney said the job was delayed as they tried to find ways to include sidewalks into the plan. With little response from immediate residents on the road, Assistant Town Engineer Brian Szczurko said the sidewalk piece was stymied by telephone poles, large shade trees and property lines. The town would have to take property along the roadway and overcome other obstacles due to the configuration of the road itself, he said. Selectmen asked to have the pavement part of the project move forward without sidewalks for now, but revisit the effort at a later date.
Beginning next summer, if approved, road projects on the docket will include a long stretch of Adams Road from Merriam Road to Valleyview Road, and then to High Point. Also, Institute Road, from East Street to Wesson, could be the subject of a base rehab and drainage project. Stowe Road might receive base rehab and drainage a year earlier than planned because it would tie into another drainage project on George Hill Road.
Highlighted is Browns Road, one of the few dirt roads left in town, could finally be paved. Discussion on nearby Old Upton Road once again centered on the cost of engineering, which has stopped the project in the past. Selectman Chair Jennifer Thomas asked if the expense could once again be evaluated to move the project along. McInerney said he would look into it.
Rounding out the proposals for 2017 include Church Street from South Street to Providence Road, and Bruce Street from South Street to Pullard Road.
