A Sutton woman was airlifted to UMass Memorial Hospital after crashing her car into a traffic dummy at Grafton Common Tuesday night.

The crash occurred about 10:15 p.m., Grafton police reported. Officers and a Grafton fire rescue team responded after several 911 calls came in over a rollover motor vehicle crash with injuries. MedStar Ambulance was also dispatched.

“On their arrival, officers observed that a vehicle, a 2007 Mitsubishi Spyder convertible, had struck the traffic stanchion at the Grafton Common and rolled over,” Grafton Police Chief Normand Crepeau, Jr. said in a news release. “Officers found the driver and sole occupant pinned under the vehicle and administered first aid until the ambulance arrived.” Due to the seriousness of the injuries, a UMass Memorial Lifeflight was also brought in, police said.

Grafton Fire personnel extricated the operator, later identified as Debra Hovagimian, 54, of Sutton, and MedStar Ambulance transported her to a field at the North Street Elementary School which Lifeflight used as a landing zone. Hovagimian was rushed to the waiting helicopter and then flown to UMass Hospital for treatment, police officials said.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the Mitsubishi, operated by Hovagimian, was traveling in a westerly direction on Upton Street (Route 140) when it struck the traffic stanchion at the intersection of Upton and South Streets.

“The Grafton Police Department is continuing its investigation of the crash with the assistance of the CEMLEC Collision Reconstruction Team and the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office,” Crepeau said.
